Culottes - the unequivocal best style of trousers

Culottes are a style of trousers and since discovering them they have been my favourite style of trousers. Not only is the aesthetic amazing they are also incredibly comfortable.

Culottes can be defined as women’s trousers, which are typically knee-length or calf-length which have been cut to somewhat resemble a skirt. Thus, there is a difference within this classification for multiple different styles of culottes. But the core basic component is a pair of trousers which are fitted at the waist and which flair out to create loose pants which could be construed as resembling a skirt.

Thus, you can get multiple different styles of culottes. The pair I am wearing in this photo are probably my most comfortable pair of trousers. They are a deep mustard yellow colour. The culottes also have a strong brown undertone which makes them perfect to pair with other pieces which have the undertone. For example, the top I am wearing in this picture. The cream background is not a straight cream but has strong brown undertones which means it pairs well tonally with the culottes.

Additionally, the patterning of the top is one which adds interest and individualism to the outfit. The pattern is composed of thistles. Thistles are the national emblem of Scotland and relate to a group of flowering plants which have prickles surrounding the flower. The thistles in this pattern have purple flowers and deep green leaves and stems. The pattern features various sized thistles and thistles at various orientations. This works to create interest and diversity within the pattern.

I like this pattern not only for the colour aspect – purple and green being two of my favourite colours. I also really like the uniqueness of this pattern. Thistles on a top is not something I would have considered before coming across this pattern. But this pattern is super cute and the style of the top with the long sleeves is one I like to. I like longer sleeved t-shirts as I burn very easily, hence the less suncream I must apply the better.

Back to the culottes which have four buttons at the waist on both the left and the right side. The buttons start mid centre and then curve around to just under your hip bone. This alignment of buttons is not only very stylish, but it is also rather cute and adds a focal point to the trousers. If they did not have this feature there would be the risk that there would be no focal point on the trousers, and they might appear as bland.

However, the advent of the buttons ensures that this isn’t the case. It is features like this which I think make clothing interesting and unique. Any person can buy a pair of denim jeans and pair them with a white top and not have to be concerned about making a fashion faux pas with this outfit. However, with time you might find this combination becomes boring or you feel unoriginal and one way to combat that is to find pieces such as these culottes which have one slight, small component which elevates them from the norm and makes them into a statement piece.

These culottes reach mid-shin and do flair out. I am not going to make the argument that you could envision them as a skirt because I think if you are doing that you might need to get your eyes tested. But with other culottes, I have come across I can see how you could make this a valid argument.

The other major benefit of these culottes is their versatility. They are great to wear in spring and autumn. They are a wonderful intermediary trouser. They can, however, be worn in summer though (especially in the evenings), as the wide trouser legs mean they are relatively cool and don’t stick to your skin making you hot. Additionally, though they can also be worn in winter as part of a layered outfit. You could wear them over tights, and they would suit very well to a coat or even a heavy cardigan.

This layering feature is also applicable for cardigans, jumpers, coats and even various t-shirts. You could quite happily wear these culottes with a turtleneck and a cardigan and a coat if needed. Or just as easily a more summer style such as the one shown in the photos here.

Accompanying this outfit here I am also wearing a wide brim hat. I love this hat and have discussed previously its various tonal undertones. But above all, it is a brilliant hat which provides ample sun protection for your face and neck and thus limits once again the amount of suncream which is necessary to apply.

Thus, this outfit together composes a lovely, unique and stylish spring outfit. The tonal undertones align neatly and bring cohesion to the outfit. The best part though is the culottes. They are comfortable, practical and stylish. They are also a cut which is flattering and suits me. This is another crucial step, as finding cuts of clothes which suit you and flatter you are always going to make you feel more comfortable in your clothes. Wearing comfortable clothes allows you to feel confident in your outfits which in turn allows you to develop your sense of style as you’ll be more confident in yourself. So, whether that is culottes for you or something else entirely is something I am unable to answer but I hope whatever it may be that you can find it successfully.
